이집트에서는 2011년 1월25일부터 2월 11일까지 이집트의 장기집권 독재자인 호스니 무바라트의 퇴진을 요구하며 반독재정부 시위가 있었다.
이로 인해 많은 사상자가 발생했으며 대통령은 사퇴하고 정권은 군부체제로 이어졌지만, 정국은 불안해졌다.
관광산업은 이집트의 가장 중요한 산업 중 하나이며 정권의 불안함으로 2011년 이후 관광객이 점차 감소하였으며, 많은 사람들이 2011년 이집트 혁명 및 주변 국가들의 불안정한 상황으로 인해 이집트 관광이 안전하지 않다고 생각하게 되었다.

아래 관광객 흐름을 보면 꾸준히 감소하고 있는 것을 볼 수 있다.

이에 따라 최근 (2012년 9월) 관광업 관련 종사자들이 (예, Tourism Union) 정부에 관광객들을 위한 안전 보장을 요구하는 시위가 벌어졌다.

Egyptian tour guides protest over security fears

As Egypt struggles to rebuild its tourism industry following the turmoil of last year's revolution, tour guides have taken to the streets of Cairo to protest at what they say is a lack of security at key tourist spots.

They claim that unlicensed vendors are resorting to harassment and intimidation of tour guides and visitors.
